A body found near a home on the Big Island Lake Cree Territory has been identified.
According to the RCMP, the human remains found May 3 were positively identified as those of 20-year-old Dominic Kahpoonapit with the help of an RCMP forensic anthropologist.
The Mounties said Kahpoonapit was a resident of the Big Island Lake Cree Territory who was reported missing late last year.
“Since Dominic was reported missing on December 13, 2022, Pierceland RCMP have been working diligently to locate him,” the RCMP said in a statement. “Dominic’s family has been notified and Victim Services has been engaged to provide support.”
Police said officers searched the area where Kahpoonapit’s body was found, but did not locate any additional remains.
The investigation is now in the hands of RCMP Major Crimes, but police did not say whether there were any indications of foul play.
The Big Island Lake Cree Territory is located northwest of Meadow Lake.
