With the snow finally melting, some roads are becoming visible around Saskatchewan for the first time since fall, and it’s not always a pretty sight.
That’s why CAA Saskatchewan is inviting drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to nominate their least-favourite stretches of roads and highways around the province as part of its annual Worst Roads campaign. The nomination and voting period opens Tuesday and runs until April 25.
“Potholes and crumbling pavement have been the most prominent safety issues during the CAA Worst Roads campaigns,” the CAA said in a statement. “However, cracks, general disrepair, poor signage, congestion, and unsafe infrastructure have also been identified by road users.”
Saskatchewan has more than 250,000 kilometres of roads, which the CAA said is more than any other province.
The campaign is more than just a fun way to compare potholes. The CAA said it’s also part of an advocacy push for better road maintenance, and reports on the nominated roads are also shared with government and business leaders “in hopes of sparking conversation and action.”
Shantel Lipp, the head of the Saskatchewan Heavy Construction Association, praised the annual campaign for drawing the government’s attention to some areas that might be otherwise overlooked.
“The work that it does and the attention it draws to some of the roads in Saskatchewan is really important,” the CAA’s statement quoted Lipp as saying.
