It’s been a season many might prefer to forget, but the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s basketball team is getting a boost.
Canada West named Huskies forward Maxwell Amoafo player of the week after two stellar games against the Trinity Western Spartans played at the Physical Activity Complex.
Amoafo amassed 21 points, 13 rebounds, one block and two steals in a 104-87 win against the Spartans on Friday and followed that up with 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the Huskies’ 82-64 victory over Trinity Western on Saturday.
The fifth-year forward was a major factor in both wins, keeping the 5-11 Huskies in the playoff race with just four games left in the season.
Winnipeg Wesmen guard Kyanna Giles, a former member of the Regina Cougars, was named the women’s top player after setting a Canada West-era record for her school with 46 points in Friday night’s game against the Fraser Valley Cascades.
The Huskies will return to the Physical Activity Complex on Friday night, when they’re to face the Alberta Golden Bears to open a two-game series. The following week, Saskatchewan is to wrap up the regular season on the road in Abbotsford against Fraser Valley.
