With cold weather approaching, furnace maintenance is a must

As an extended cold snap moves into Saskatchewan, it’s important to test furnaces and make sure they’re running well.

Boss Plumbing’s Steve Hall shared that advice Friday morning on the 650 CKOM Morning Show.

“The homeowner should go to their thermostat and increase it a few degrees to ensure that the furnace is actually able to achieve its set point,” he said.

“A lot of people don’t realize their furnace isn’t working properly until it’s very cold and the furnace just cannot keep up.”

Hall suggested listening for any odd sounds like squealing that might indicate the furnace needs maintenance.

A hands-on method to try ahead of the cool-down is clearing lines.

“Turn your power off to your furnace first, then you can blow some compressed air through the lines or pour some water through the lines to make sure that they’re draining properly,” Hall said.

“If they’re clogged, or drain slowly, this can cause pressure switch issues in your furnace and cause the furnace to short cycle or quit working.”

During the winter season, Hall said it’s also important to ensure outside vents are clear to prevent a potential buildup of carbon monoxide, according to Hall.

“You just want to make sure that there isn’t any snow or ice that will block your air intake or exhaust and just cause your furnace to starve for air,” he said.

Along with the cold-weather maintenance, Hall said it’s important to keep up with regular maintenance like changing filters.
