As expected, the mercury started dropping in Saskatchewan on Friday afternoon.
As of 4 p.m., extreme cold warnings were in place across northern Saskatchewan and in the eastern area of the province, including Yorkton, Melville, Esterhazy, Kamsack, Canora and Preeceville.
“A long period of extreme wind chill is expected as a frigid Arctic air mass sets in place over the eastern Prairies,” the advisory issued by Environment Canada said. “Wind chill values near -40 will occur (Friday night) in parts of southern Manitoba and southeast Saskatchewan.
“Some moderation in wind chill will occur Saturday during the day, but extreme values are expected to return Saturday night and the warning will likely be expanded.”
In Regina, it was -14 C at 4 p.m., but the temperature was expected to fall to -25 C overnight. The forecast high Saturday is -21 C.
Saskatoon’s temperature at 4 p.m., was -16 C. The forecast called for an overnight low of -20 C, with a high Saturday of -20 C.
High temperatures throughout the next week in Saskatchewan are expected to be in the -20 C range.
