Police officers in Saskatoon administered naloxone to a 17-year-old boy Thursday morning when he became unresponsive after a car chase involving a stolen vehicle.
According to police, an officer spotted the stolen vehicle in a parking lot on 22nd Street West at about 1 a.m., but the driver took off with police in pursuit.
The chase was called off, police said, but officers soon found the vehicle stuck in the snow and abandoned in a back alley on Tache Crescent. Inside the vehicle — which was reported stolen earlier in the day — police found several weapons, including an axe, baton and “brass knuckle type weapon.”
A 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were found nearby and arrested, police said, but that’s when things took a different turn.
“Officers learned the 17-year-old boy may have consumed an intoxicant prior to being arrested,” police said in a statement. “Shortly after being taken into custody he became unresponsive and life-saving measures, including the use of naloxone, were administered.”
Naloxone is a nasal spray that can temporarily counter the effects of a drug overdose.
Police said the boy was assessed by paramedics and taken to a hospital in stable condition.
He’s now facing several criminal charges including dangerous driving, evading police, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
