A pack of Arctic wolves are the newest attraction at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.
Sisters Nuna, Anori and Inneq arrived in early December from the Toronto Zoo and are now on display for zoo visitors.
Zoo manager Jeff Mitchell says the animals are still getting accustomed to their new surroundings.
“When we get new animals here, they go through a lot of process and a lot of training with their zookeepers, learning their new areas and new habitats,” said Mitchell.
“It takes a lot of work but ultimately it’s a good thing for these animals.”
The zoo has been preparing for the wolves’ arrival for months after the last grey wolf, Buddy, died in September after a 15-year stay at the park.
The city took the time to upgrade the entire wolf exhibit. The interior upgrades include a new training and enrichment area that allows zookeepers to work more closely with the wolves.
Automatic heated water bowls were also added providing access to fresh, clean water. In the outdoor portion, a new structure provides an opportunity for the wolves to den or climb.
In the summer, the wolves will also get the opportunity to explore an upgraded pond in the exhibit.
Mitchell hopes having the new wolves will increase the public’s interest in learning more about the animals.
“They’re just so mysterious,” Mitchell said. “People don’t get to see a lot of them in the wild. What they do in the environment and how they help to control deer populations and work together as a pack is super-mysterious to people.”
