For 36 years, Canadian soccer fans have been waiting for the men’s national team to play in a World Cup match.
It’s about to happen.
Canada is to face Belgium on Wednesday at 1 p.m., as the 2022 tournament continues in Qatar.
The last (and only) time Canada qualified for the World Cup was 1986 in Mexico. The team lost all three of its matches, falling 1-0 to France on June 1, 2-0 to Hungary on June 6 and 2-0 to the Soviet Union on June 9.
Canada has tried and failed to qualify for the World Cup 13 times, including eight straight times since its last appearance.
The Canadian side enters the 2022 tournament ranked 41st in the FIFA world rankings, while Belgium is No. 2.
Canada’s other group stage matches are against 12th-ranked Croatia (Sunday, 10 a.m.) and 22nd-ranked Morocco (Dec. 1, 9 a.m.).
