Hundreds of CFL fans got their fill Wednesday at the Grey Cup pancake breakfast at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon.
Flapjacks and sausages were being dished out ahead of the 109th Grey Cup on Sunday at Mosaic Stadium.
Even though the Saskatchewan Roughriders won’t be playing in the game, many fans were just excited to see the biggest CFL game of the year return to the province.
The 2020 Grey Cup was scheduled to be played in Regina, but had to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were feeling the event will be a good boost to the economy.
Saskatoon Mayor Charlie Clark, who was in attendance at the breakfast, said the event is a great opportunity to welcome visitors to the province.
“The Grey Cup is great for bringing the country together around a great football game,” Clark said.
The Riders truly are a provincial team, Clark said, so it only made sense to hold events across Saskatchewan in celebration of the Grey Cup.
“Even though they’re not in this city, our city feels very much a part of the CFL, of football, and we have such a great history of football in our city and province,” Clark added.
A few Roughriders players were also in attendance, including Evan Johnson, Brayden Lenius and Jorgen Hus, but Gainer the Gopher stole the show for the most part, as he typically does.
The festivities now shift to Regina for the kickoff party Wednesday night ahead of the CFL awards, which will be handed out Thursday.
