The Kahkewistahaw First Nation celebrated the monumental opening of the Kahkewistahaw Gas and Convenience Store on Thursday.
It’s the first of many businesses on the Saskatoon Urban Development Kahkewistahaw Landing. The First Nation said this marks the beginning of 15 operations that will be opened on this sector of land, on Claypool Drive by the Saskatoon airport.
The historical opening is not only important to the Kahkewistahaw First Nation, as its investment provides employment opportunities for First Nations peoples, but for the growth in business for Saskatoon.
Chris Sicotte, the board chair of the Kahkewistahaw Economic Management Corporation, said the project has been a long time coming and is a proud moment for the Kahkewistahaw First Nation.
“The economic opportunities that we are seeing from our First Nations communities are becoming more and more prevalent,” Sicotte said.
The ceremony began with a prayer from Kahkewistahaw Elder Wendy Alexson, land acknowledgements and an honour song.
“We always want to make sure we acknowledge the leadership and the people that made sure this project was able to come to completion,” Sicotte said.
Kahkewistahaw Chief Evan Taypotat said the project has been running for six years, and will be the first of 15 grand openings over the next five. A Mcdonald’s, hotel and convention centre, office complex and medical centre are also in the works for new developments.
“Together we want to make Saskatoon shine,” Taypotat said.
Another grand opening will happen at the Kahkewistahaw Landing on Sunday for the new Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations building.
The Kahkewistahaw First Nation has worked closely with the City of Saskatoon and Indigenous Services Canada on the project.
Mayor Charlie Clark attended the ceremony to congratulate the First Nation and council for the opening. He said when First Nations decide to enter into a partnership to build an urban reserve with the city, it benefits everyone involved.
In 2017, the Kahkewistahaw First Nation acquired 60 acres of land beside the airport.
The Kahkewistahaw First Nation is a Cree nation located in southern Saskatchewan on the edge of Qu’Appelle Valley. It has 2,234 members.
