Nasty conditions and sticky snow engulfed areas of the province Saturday.
James Colangelo, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said drivers could face some treacherous conditions travelling around the province, especially the Saskatoon area.
“If you don’t need to travel this weekend, I would recommend not to,” said Colangelo.
Freezing rain, snowfall, drifting snow and high winds are making for icy and slippery conditions on highways.
According to the Highway Hotline, the Trans-Canada Highway was closed just before 9 p.m. from Mortlach to Carmichael. Highway 7 was closed from Fiske to the Alberta border.
Travel wasn’t recommended on the Trans-Canada from Regina to Mortlach, Highway 11 from Regina through Saskatoon to MacDowall, and on Highway 16 from Saskatoon to Sheho.
Similar conditions existed on other highways, including Highway 2 from Regina to St. Louis, Highway 5 from Saskatoon to Rama, Highway 15 both east and west of Kenaston, and Highway 16 from Dafoe to Sheho.
Snowfall, winter storm and wind warnings were issued for regions across Saskatchewan on Saturday evening, with special weather statements in place in other areas.
Blizzard-like conditions are typically seen with Alberta Clippers.
Saskatoon and northern Saskatchewan were sitting along the rain-snow boundary. Snow between five and 10 centimetres were expected to fall Saturday, with another five to 10 centimetres coming.
Regina and southern Saskatchewan could see more rain turning into slush, with rain turning from snow later Saturday.
The Alberta Clipper arrived in the northwest on Friday night and will travel through the province throughout the weekend.
Colangelo said conditions should begin to taper off on later Sunday morning and into the afternoon.
Poor driving conditions are still expected after the storm ends.
