An investigation is underway after a man was shot by officers on Little Pine First Nation.
Cut Knife RCMP said police responded early Saturday morning after three separate reports involving a 49-year-old man from the community. They included an assault, a gun pointed at security members and an abandoned 911 call of a man with a gun thinking about suicide.
In a release, Mounties said two officers came across the man with a gun near a home. The man was shot, then treated in hospital and released a few hours later into police custody.
There are few details about the man’s actions in the moments leading up to the shooting. No police officers were hurt.
The Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team are now taking over the investigation. A request has also been made to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General to appoint independent observers, including one Indigenous observer.
RCMP are not naming the man who was shot, saying the circumstances do not meet Privacy Act exemptions and that no charges have been laid.
