The date of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, Sept. 19, will be a federal holiday in Canada.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement Tuesday, according to the Canadian Press, saying the date will be a day of mourning.
Trudeau said his government is working out the details, and will co-ordinate with the provinces and territories to work out the details.
In a statement issued Tuesday morning, the Saskatchewan government said it was still discussing the idea.
“Late yesterday, we were notified by the federal government that a federal holiday was under active consideration,” the statement said. “While there are discussions currently underway, no decision has yet been made for a provincial holiday.”
The Queen passed away Thursday at age 96 following a record-breaking 70-year reign. Her eldest son has ascended to the throne as King Charles III.
The Queen’s casket is currently being transported to London to lie in state before her funeral.
