Nearly two weeks after Stewart Valley School was destroyed by fire, the Chinook School Division has found a home for the school’s students and its staff.
They’re heading for Success.
In a media release Wednesday, the division said students will start going to school in Success on Monday.
“Through the division’s consultations and presentation of options, many Stewart Valley families indicated a desire for Chinook to provide a space where the students and staff would remain together as a school, while some families made the choice to register their children at another Chinook school in the area,” the division said in the release.
“After exploring all possible facilities, it was determined that Success School can make accommodations within their space without significant disruption to their school operations, based on the present number of Stewart Valley students moving to the school.”
There were 41 children registered at Stewart Valley School when the fire destroyed the school.
The division said the Stewart Valley students and staff going to school in Success will be able to keep their current classroom configurations, as will the Success School classrooms.
The towns are about a 30-minute drive apart and the division said transportation will be provided.
“The administration from both schools will be working together to ensure a smooth transition for all students and staff,” the release added.
Chinook thanked the Stewart Valley School families for their “patience, support and input during a very difficult and challenging time for their community” as the division tried to work out a solution.
