Pope Francis has wrapped up a week-long trip across Canada that featured stops in Alberta, Quebec and Nunavut.
The purpose of the visit was to give his deepest apologies for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools.
Chief Cadmus Delorme of the Cowessess First Nation shared his thoughts on what Pope Francis had to say on behalf of the Catholic Church and how many people feel as though there were some key points left out of the apology.
“I found that No. 58 was not fulfilled,” Delorme explained.
“Number 58 of Truth and Reconciliation is for the Roman Catholic Church’s role in the spiritual, cultural, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children in catholic-ran residential schools. We did not hear that in the acknowledgement. It was almost like the Pope left a deep hole in the acknowledgement on the full role in the church.”
Delorme said we as Canadians now must find a way to move forward together as one.
“It’s up to us as Canadians to pick up where we are at, own it, and address it together so that we can truly get to reconciliation.”
