Two people were killed and a third person was badly hurt in a collision Monday night near Balgonie.
According to the RCMP, a car and a van collided in the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway shortly before midnight.
The driver of the car, an 18-year-old man from White City, and a passenger in the van, a 64-year-old woman from Nanaimo, B.C., were both pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Their families have been notified, the RCMP said.
The man driving the van was taken to hospital with what the RCMP called “serious injuries,” but the Mounties could not provide an update on his condition.
The highway was closed during the police investigation, but it has since reopened to traffic. The investigation into the crash is still ongoing, the RCMP said, with help from a collision reconstruction specialist.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an amended version of this story. The RCMP corrected the information about the crash, noting the woman who died was a passenger in the van.
