In the early-morning hours of Thursday, lightning strikes could be seen and loud thunderous roars could be heard in the distance in Regina.
But for a couple in the Cathedral neighbourhood, a lightning strike was too close for comfort after it struck their home.
“It was like 3 (a.m.) and there was a huge flash of lightning,” said Merrilee Rasmussen. “The light kept going and going and I went into the bathroom area and there was a cover from the bathroom fan that was on the floor. It was burning.
“I didn’t realize that there was a fire on the roof. I just saw this thing on the floor that was burning, went and got a wet towel and put that out and then realized it was up above.”

Merrilee and her husband, Aydon, promptly called the fire department after noticing smoke.
“It could have been an awful lot worse,” Aydon said. “There’s charring and there may be some structural damage to the beams.
“The house is full of books. If it would have gone up in flames, it would have been spectacular.”
The couple thanked the fire department’s quick response for easing their fears.
As for the true extent of damages, the couple is unsure, but is hopeful to get a better understanding soon.
