The flight has landed, but the work is just beginning for Saskatchewan’s Ukrainian community after welcoming newcomers fresh off a plane from Warsaw.
On Monday, a flight landed in Regina carrying 230 Ukrainians fleeing the conflict in their homeland.
“It is exciting. It is also a big responsibility for us and the community here to help people settle,” said Olena Shyian, president of the Regina branch of the Ukrainian National Federation.
She said her organization has been known as a “hub for all newcomers” for decades. She and her team are preparing to help people with things like finding housing, getting kids prepared to start school, assisting with job searches, and arranging for daycare, she said.
Shyian also said the group is getting keys Tuesday for a REAL District facility that they plan to fill with donations of clothing and other items.
“People are arriving with two (or) three suitcases only, so a lot of help is needed for them,” Shyian explained.
She said they will be accepting donations and a schedule will be set up in the coming days for people who wish to volunteer their time supporting those who are new to the province.
