There will be more to explore for kids at Wanuskewin Heritage Park this summer.
Conexus Credit Union and Wanuskewin are partnering again with a $5,000 donation from Conexus to make Indigenous cultural education programs available during the summer.
It’s been a busy month for the park, as they welcomed six bison calves earlier in June.
Jessie Muhlbach, a senior interpretive guide at Wanuskewin, said it’s great to have these programs back in place.
“Just to have the opportunity and the support, knowing the community is there supporting us, and then having the youth come out here absolutely is really important,” Muhlbach said.
Even though the funding is only for this summer, Wanuskewin CEO Darlene Brander said it is going to open more opportunities in the future.
“Having Conexus invest in programming through our summer camps is a really great step forward, because it allows us to welcome the next generation in, in a really good way,” Brander said.
Brander said the investment helps strengthen the partnership they already had after a $100,000 donation in late 2020 during the Thundering Ahead campaign.
Brander says the funding is going to help create a great experience for children and create lifelong memories, especially now that kids are out of school and enjoying the summer holidays.
“It means that now this is really a program the whole family can come to and take part in,” Bander said.
With the donation, Muhlbach will be leading two programs focusing on bison and archaeology.
Registration for the camps runs through July and August for kids aged 7-12.
