The number of overdose calls to Saskatoon paramedics took a massive jump in 2021.
Overdoses contributed to a record high call volume last year for Medavie Health Services West, which saw 5,000 more emergency calls than in 2020.
In 2021, paramedics administered 609 doses of Narcan, representing a 500 per cent increase in two years. The figures exclude the doses administered by police, firefighters and the general public.
“These numbers are very alarming,” said Medavie’s public affairs director, Troy Davies.
“Unfortunately, we are responding to these calls throughout the entire city. There are no hot spots. The increased stress on paramedics on dealing with these critical patients adds up quickly.”
Narcan, also known as naloxone, is now stocked in ambulances across the province to hand out to the public. The provincial government has also distributed over 29,000 take-home kits.
There’s no immediate solution to the problem. According to Davies, all they can do is continue working alongside local and provincial stakeholders.
