The new season at Saskatoon’s Persephone Theatre features something for just about everyone.
The 2022-23 season lineup was announced Wednesday, and it all opens with ‘Stones in his Pockets’ by Marie Jones, which was slated to be shown in March of 2020 but had to be halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Persephone will also be helping to launch the first season of the Saskatchewan Jewish Arts Festival through a performance of ‘Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story’ featuring Klezmer music and theatre blended together to tell the story of two Jewish Romanian refugees who arrived in Canada in 1908.
“I am so happy Persephone is able to help the Saskatchewan Jewish Arts Festival launch its inaugural year with this partnership,” Heather Cant, artistic director with Persephone, said in a statement. “I know Saskatchewan audiences are going to love it!”
Also slated for the stage in the upcoming season are performances of ‘The Fiancée’ by Holly Lewis, ‘The Herd’ by Kenneth T. Williams, and ‘The Birds and the Bees’ by Mark Crawford, which will be staged as a collaborative performance between Persephone Theatre and Regina’s Globe Theatre.
“This partnership between Persephone and the Globe is a wonderful opportunity for each company to highlight the incredible theatrical talents of our local communities in one show, and then share it with both Saskatoon and Regina audiences,” Cant said.
Other performances this season include ‘Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers’ on the Backstage Stage, ‘Frozen River’ as part of the theatre’s Youth Series, and an introductory theatre experience for young audiences featuring a performance of Margery Williams’ beloved story ‘The Velveteen Rabbit.’
“This season is about hope and transformation,” Cant said. “Hope and transformation can come in many forms, and I hope this season will help audiences find more of both.”
Season subscriptions go on sale June 1, and more information on the shows is available on Persephone’s website.
