Damage to a home on Saskatoon’s west side is estimated at around $50,000 after a fire Friday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to the home in the 200 block of Avenue H South around 3 p.m. after getting several 9-1-1 calls. When they got to the scene, there was heavy smoke billowing from the home, and the entire basement was on fire.
Natural gas and electrical lines to the home were shut off for safety reasons.
It took about an hour and a half to get the fire under control. Two homes on either side of the burning building were also evacuated as a precaution.
Four people were inside the house at the time the fire began, but all were able to escape. One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire department says the home had no smoke alarms. Investigators are now looking into the possible cause of the fire.
