The long-time chief of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation near Saskatoon is facing charges of assault and mischief.
According to court documents, 54-year-old Darcy Murray Bear was charged April 13 with assaulting a woman on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation on Sept. 25 of last year.
On the same day, the mischief charge states Bear allegedly damaged “without legal justification or excuse and without colour right property to wit, patio furniture of Dakota Dunes Resort the value of which did not exceed five thousand dollars.”
The court documents indicate Bear was not present for his first court appearance this past Tuesday.
Bear was first elected to the Whitecap Dakota First Nation Council in 1991 at the age of 23, and was elected chief in 1993.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday at Saskatoon Provincial Court, where he’s slated to enter a plea.
