Using a company credit card to pay for more than $18,000 in personal items cost a SaskTel employee their job.
That was the only loss of public money within government ministries and Crown corporations reported between Jan. 1 and March 31.
The Provincial Comptroller tabled a report showing no losses for executive government in the fourth quarter of 2021-22. The Ministry of Advanced Education also said there weren’t any losses at Saskatchewan Polytechnic or regional colleges due to fraud or other acts by employees, suppliers or contractors.
From November of last year to February of this year, a SaskTel employee charged $18,558.30 worth of personal items to their corporate credit card and didn’t repay it.
According to a media release issued Monday, the Crown corporation’s security team started to look into the matter, but the employee on March 1 refused to meet with investigators to explain the charges. The employee was fired with cause the next day.
SaskTel withheld $3,633.99 of the employee’s final wages and reported the incident to police. The release said the company “will review and pursue litigation options as necessary.”
