Saskatoon city council is allowing a temporary wellness centre to continue operating in the city’s downtown for the rest of the spring.
On Monday, the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) was granted a lease extension at its First Avenue North location until June 15 with the possibility of a further extension down the road.
Mayor Charlie Clark says administration has been asked to draft a revision to the bylaw that would allow the shelter’s lease to be extended for up to one year.
“As part of that, there will be comprehensive safety and security plans put in place. The police, fire, city and downtown community work with the STC to address some of the issues that have been arising and affecting some of the neighbouring businesses and community members,” said Clark.
“We want everyone to be safe.”
The STC-run facility has been operating at capacity since opening in the middle of December. Now with the weather getting warmer, the focus has shifted on finding a permanent home for the centre out of the downtown area.
Clark praised the facility for its good work, but noted the challenge of getting any neighbourhood to accept it.
“Nobody wants to see these facilities in their backyard, but they all agree we need them,” he said.
“We have to treat this as a health crisis. We have to get to the bottom of what’s causing people to be addicted. I think our community really has to come together and address this from the human standpoint and build those long-term solutions.”
