It has been a long, cold winter in Saskatchewan with no shortage of bad weather.
But now, camping season is just around the corner.
Saskatchewan has opened reservations for all of its provincial parks.
Bookings for seasonal sites started a week ago. Nightly reservations for a different batch of parks opened each day until Tuesday.
Robin Campese with Saskatchewan Parks told the Greg Morgan Morning Show that campers should be able to get a site if they want.
“There are still some sites available, for sure. It gets a little more complicated around long weekends, but there will be weekends in July and August that have availability, and certainly in our ‘shoulder seasons,’ May, June and September,” she said.
While the weather has been brutal in many spots of the province, she said that isn’t stopping people from planning their trips.
“I think it has actually spurred people on and made them look forward to summer even more. We’ve seen a great response. The snow doesn’t get Saskatchewan campers down, it turns out,” she said.
Speaking of the weather, it has been a headache for workers who have to get the campsites ready for summer.
“I would suspect that it’s causing some challenges for people,” Campese said. “This is the time of the year when it’s go time, basically. So the people in the parks, they need to get things in shape for when campers arrive in just a few weeks.
“One of the biggest things for us would be waterlines. We need the ground to be unfrozen in order to turn on waterlines, so we’re really hoping for some sun and some warm weather coming our way.
“I’m sure they’ll be able to pull it off, but it will be a challenge.”
While she said there are many nightly spots available, it might be tough for someone to lock themselves in for the entire summer.
“Seasonal was really popular. We sold 726 of those and we had about 763 available,” she said.
