A legion in Saskatoon is celebrating the 105th anniversary of the start of the Battle of Vimy Ridge Saturday.
It was the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps went into attack in the same formation.
Bill Flahr is with the Nutana Legion Branch in Saskatoon and says the branch is hosting a trench dinner at the Legion as part of its celebration to honour veterans.
“Trench dinner typically consists of hardtack biscuits and a stew with jam for the biscuits and a ration of rum,” Flahr said.
Flahr says as time passes, it becomes important to remember the veterans that sacrificed for the freedom Canadians enjoy today.
“The Legion has three pillars: Promoting remembrance, supporting veterans and supporting the community,” he said.
“We can’t (ever) forget the sacrifice that the men and women made to give us the great country that we live in.”
Before the meal took place, the museum in the Legion’s basement was open for viewing.
Flahr explains the significance of some of the items that are being showcased.
“They’ve got artifacts starting with the First and Second World Wars. It’s fantastic, there’s everything from various weapons, uniforms, medals, knives and we got a few trench boards,” Flahr said.
Following the museum viewing, there was a historical presentation and a dance.
