You don’t need to be worried this April Fool’s Day: The Saskatoon Blades have not lost the plot … but the team is going bananas.
Given the Blades’ game Friday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors falls on April 1, the team thought it would have some fun with the occasion.
“It’s not a Blades game, it is a Bananas game,” explained Tyler Wawryk, the Blades’ director of business operation. “It’s the same great players (and) the same great product, but there’s a little bit of a different logo on the front of the jersey and we decided to change our name and have a bit of fun.
“We pride ourselves on entertaining our fans and providing a fun atmosphere and for April Fool’s Day we are just ramping things up, which should make for a fun atmosphere. It is shaping up to be a great game against the Moose Jaw Warriors, as it looks like these two teams will meet in the first round of the playoffs, so it will be a fantastic game on the ice and in the arena for our fans as well.”
The Blades are sponsored by Save-On-Foods and with bananas ripe on the shelf, it seemed appropriate to go with what is readily available in the sponsor’s produce aisle.
And the whole thing is being done for a good cause: The jerseys worn by the players will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The jerseys certainly have a banana twist to them.
“At first glance, you may not notice a whole lot different from our original third jersey. They are gold like our third jersey. They have some touches on them. Where it would usually say ‘Saskatoon,’ it says, ‘Go bananas.’ We have bananas on our socks and helmet too,” Wawyrk said.
And if you are crazy for bananas but not necessarily hockey, there is fun off the ice as well.
“There will be things to spot and see when fans arrive at the doors, (such as) special concessions you wouldn’t normally see. We have banana splits and even banana daquiris for the adults,” Wawyrk said.
Puck drop is 7 p.m. at SaskTel Centre — but watch you don’t slip on all that banana peel.
