The Saskatoon Police Service has been tabbed to investigate after a Swift Current man was shot Thursday by an officer from the Swift Current Municipal RCMP.
Citing the Privacy Act, the Mounties said they don’t have the authority to name the man who was shot.
In a media release, the RCMP said officers got a call Thursday at around 5:45 p.m., about an assault with a weapon in an apartment building in Swift Current.
“The police response involved the discharge of a firearm and a 23-year-old male from Swift Current received what were reported to be non-life-threatening injuries,” the release said.
The man was treated by the officers at the scene before paramedics arrived and took him to hospital.
On Friday, the man was charged with assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failure to comply with release and probation orders.
The RCMP has asked the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct the independent, external investigation into the shooting. The Ministry of Justice also will appoint an independent investigation observer.
