A brawl involving police officers and a suspect in Canora on Wednesday got so wild that a nearby school enacted its “hold and secure” protocols.
According to the RCMP, officers got a call at about 1:20 p.m., about a possible impaired driver on Highway 9. About 90 minutes later, an officer from the Yorkton Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan found the vehicle in Canora.
“The officer stopped the vehicle and observed that the adult male driver was showing signs of impairment,” the RCMP said in a media release Thursday. “The officer informed the driver he was under arrest. While attempting to handcuff him, the male assaulted the officer and attempted to disarm them.”
Members from the Canora RCMP detachment showed up, but police allege the man kept threatening and assaulting officers even after they had used a Taser on him.
It reportedly took six police officers and several Town of Canora employees to subdue the man. During the arrest, an elementary school in the area went into hold and secure.
The Mounties said two police officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle.
A 32-year-old man from Preeceville is facing two counts each of assault on a police officer, uttering threats against a person and resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and one count each of disarming a police officer, impaired driving and mischief under $5,000.
He’s to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on Friday.
