Nestor’s Bakery is making some dough for Ukraine.
Day after day, the bakery sells out after making hundreds of doughnuts in the style of the Ukrainian flag.
The best part: All of the proceeds from the flag doughnuts are going toward the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCG) to help those caught in a desperate situation overseas. Ukraine was invaded by Russia on Feb. 24.
Since the war began, Nestor’s Bakery has raised roughly $11,000 and counting.
Tim Carey, a baker at Nestor’s Bakery, said it’s overwhelming that the community is still supporting the fundraiser now that a couple of weeks have passed.
“It’s really good. There’s such a big Ukrainian population here (and) it is nice to see,” Carey said while preparing another batch of doughnuts.
The employees have been making the doughnuts non-stop since the war started, trying to make as many as possible. Some days, the staff members need a break and take phone orders, which easily fill up several days in advance.
“Every day, it is really surprising the amount of (people) that come out,” Carey said. “We thought we were going to be done within a week, but it’s not even slowing down.”
As the entire community continues to rally around the local bakery that has been in business for 93 years, Carey says there’s true joy in seeing everyone show love to the people struggling in Ukraine.
“It’s a nice change from the last couple (of) years,” Carey said, referring to the impact of COVID-19. “Now, everyone’s really gathering together, to be honest.”
In terms of the fundraiser’s future, Nestor’s Bakery will take things on a weekly basis. However, after a day off Monday to recuperate, the bakery already has two full days of orders to fill.
