Saskatchewan’s Family Day weekend will also be a free fishing weekend.
The provincial government announced Thursday that, from Feb. 19 to 21, people can fish any provincial waterbody that has an open sport fishing season without buying a fishing licence.
The free fishing weekend doesn’t apply to bodies of water inside national parks in the province.
“More than a quarter of a million anglers fish our province’s waters each year,” Environment Minister Warren Kaeding said in a media release. “Ice fishing is a favourite pastime for many Saskatchewan residents. Free fishing weekends are a great time for visitors or new anglers to give it a go — if they haven’t had the opportunity.”
Possession limits and reduced limits on some waterbodies still apply. Anyone planning to transport fish out of the province must have a valid Saskatchewan angling licence.
The province also reminded anglers to dress for the weather and to be aware of ice thickness before travelling on it.
