The number of active COVID-19 cases being reported in Saskatchewan fell again Wednesday.
The Ministry of Health said there were 10,354 active cases in the province, down 1,016 from Tuesday’s update. The total is the lowest it has been since Jan. 14, when it was 10,325.
The active case count has fallen by nearly 3,000 since it reached its all-time high of 13,290 on Jan. 23.
The government announced 1,634 recoveries, 611 new cases and four deaths Wednesday.
Two people from each of the 60-to-79 and 80-and-over age groups died. Two deaths were reported in the southeast region, with one in each of the Regina and Saskatoon regions.
To date, 997 Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID.
The number of patients with COVID in the province’s hospitals rose by two from Tuesday’s report to 372, with 40 of those in intensive care.
Hospitalizations in the Saskatoon region rose to 195, up seven from Tuesday’s total. The increase included four new ICU admissions.
A look at the numbers
The new cases were reported in the Saskatoon (219), Regina (106), central-east (46), northwest (38), north-central (38), southeast (33), south-central (28), northeast (11), southwest (11), far northwest (eight), far northeast (eight) and central-west (seven) zones.
The hometowns of 58 new cases were still being determined.
The cases in Regina were detected in 281 tests, meaning 37.7 per cent of the tests reported to public health returned a positive result.
The seven-day average of new cases dropped to 1,022, or 84.8 new cases per 100,000 people.
Of the new cases reported Wednesday, 253 had received two doses and a booster shot, 237 had got two shots, 107 were unvaccinated or fewer than 21 days removed from their first dose, and 14 had received their first dose or were less than 21 days from their second dose.
The total number of cases stood at 119,894, and 108,543 cases were considered recovered.
The inpatient hospitalizations comprised 173 incidental COVID infections, 133 cases that went to hospital to seek treatment for COVID, and 26 cases that were undetermined.
The ICU admissions included 31 patients with COVID-related illnesses (including one in a pediatric or neonatal ICU), and nine incidental COVID infections.
There were 972 doses of COVID vaccine administered in the province, increasing the total to date to more than 1.86 million. More than 897,000 of those are second shots.
