The Omicron variant may have made its way into the provincial school system.
A letter sent to parents on Wednesday indicated a “probable case” of the new variant has been diagnosed in an individual at Silverwood Heights Elementary School in Saskatoon.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) contacted the school board Wednesday. The affected person is connected to three schools — Caswell, Silverwood Heights and Vincent Massey. Contact tracing confirmed the individual had no contact with students at any of the three schools, according to a Saskatoon Public Schools spokesperson.
The letter issued by the SHA didn’t disclose if the individual was a student or a staff member.
“Public health will be conducting tracing on all close contacts including household, social (this may include friends from the school), extracurricular activities, teammates and coaches, etc,” the letter said.
The last day of classes for students is on Friday before schools shut down for the Christmas break.
