The Saskatchewan government is increasing its focus on gang-related criminal activity in the province.
The Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team (STRT) is an “intelligence-led enforcement team” that will deal with illegal weapons, drugs and human trafficking that enter Saskatchewan through trafficking corridors.
The STRT is to include 30 RCMP officers, six municipal police officers, two criminal analysts and three support staff. It’s to have offices located in Lloydminster, Estevan and Swift Current.
“These locations were chosen based on their proximity to provincial boundaries and established trafficking corridors,” the government said in a media release. “Municipal STRT resources will be located in Prince Albert, Saskatoon and Regina.”
The team can move anywhere in the province to work with other RCMP units and detachments, municipal police services, and intelligence and enforcement teams in Saskatchewan as well as in Alberta and Manitoba.
The Saskatchewan government is putting up $2.1 million for the STRT in 2021-22 and about $6.4 million per year in each subsequent fiscal year. The government noted the money is new, saying resources for the team haven’t been reallocated from other policing initiatives.
