A 57-year-old man from the Churchbridge area has been fined $3,000 and banned from hunting for one year after pleading guilty to two charges.
John Mair entered his guilty plea Nov. 3 in Yorkton Provincial Court. A third charge was withdrawn.
He initially had been charged with unlawfully hunting on private land without landowner permission, possessing wildlife taken in contravention of legislation, and leaving edible game in the field.
In a media release Tuesday, the Ministry of Environment said the incident happened Feb. 25. Conservation officers got a call on the Turn In Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line from a person who saw two individuals retrieving a dead moose north of Bredenbury.
When the officers arrived, they determined the hunters had shot the moose on fenced, private farmland, cut pieces off the animal and left edible parts of the moose in the field to waste.
The officers executed a search warrant and seized the illegally obtained moose meat from the hunters’ vehicle.
The second hunter was a minor and conservation officers and the Crown determined no charges were warranted.
Anyone who suspects wildlife, fisheries, forestry or environmental violations can call the TIPP line at 1-800-667-7561, or #5555 from a SaskTel cellular device. Violations can also be reported online.
