Salmonella infections in Western Canada prompt investigation

The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with provinces, food inspectors and Health Canada to investigate salmonella infections spanning five provinces.

As of Wednesday 46 lab confirmed cases were reported including 18 each in British Columbia and Alberta. Three cases in Saskatchewan, six in Manitoba and one in Ontario related to someone recently in Alberta.

People became sick between late September and mid-October with three people ending up in hospital, a public notice said.

The source of the outbreak is still undetermined, although many people involved in the outbreak reported eating fresh produce before getting sick.

Symptoms of a salmonella infection typically start six to 72 hours after exposure and include fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting.
