An editorial cartoon published in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash has been made into a stamp by Canada Post.
Bruce MacKinnon, an editorial cartoonist at the Halifax Chronicle Herald, drew the image. It shows Saskatchewan as an injured hockey player being supported by players representing all of the other provinces.
On April 6, 2018, the Broncos’ bus collided with a transport truck that had gone through a stop sign at the intersection of highways 35 and 335 near Tisdale. The Broncos were on their way to an SJHL playoff game in Nipawin at the time of the collision.
The crash claimed the lives of 16 people and injured 13 others.
In an article in Canada Post Magazine, MacKinnon described his cartooning style by saying: “You have to make a statement that somehow gets to the heart of that issue in a subtle, nuanced way.”
The stamp is part of a collection that pays tribute to some of Canada’s editorial cartoonists, including former Saskatchewan resident Brian Gable.
