The City of Saskatoon is disappointed that Thanksgiving gatherings won’t be limited this year, despite concern about rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
A request was made to speak with Mayor Charlie Clark on Wednesday about the province’s announcement that restrictions would not be placed on gathering sizes, but he was not available.
Instead, the Mayor’s Office shared a statement. It said the city remains “very concerned about the dire situation of our health system and knows that many residents are increasingly worried about hospital service available due to the large numbers of COVID patients.”
Last week, Saskatoon’s city council voted unanimously to send a letter to the province’s chief medical health officer, Dr. Shaqib Shahab, asking for gathering limits.
The Mayor’s Office said it had not yet heard from the province directly about its request, specifically.
The city is asking for people to take extra care to celebrate Thanksgiving safely, including asking guests about their vaccination status and visiting outside in small groups.
A special council meeting has been called for Friday morning about providing proof of vaccination at city-owned facilities.
