The proof-of-vaccination system is coming to a theatre near you in Saskatchewan, but it’s not a new release for Landmark Cinemas.
As of Friday, people are required to display their vaccine status to access at many places, including restaurants, bars, liquor stores and event centers.
Bill Walker, CEO for the movie theatre chain said the company has already been working with a vaccine passport in most other provinces.
“Saskatchewan doesn’t stand alone in this. For us in the theatre business, Saskatchewan is actually the last province to put it in,” said Walker.
Landmark will have a greeter at the door checking for proof of vaccination. The company is adding additional staff to try to keep the line moving as quickly as possible.
“The first weekend, honestly, there’s some lineups. It’s just everyone is getting used to the system. Everyone is understanding what they’re looking for and so it was a bit slow in the first weekend but it does improve,” said Walker.
Walker believes watching a movie and sitting in silence in a big theatre with a bit of distance from strangers is one of the safer activities you can do during a pandemic. He added Landmark believes vaccinations are the path forward and will follow the new provincial health measures.
“We’ve had a lot of guest interactions, a lot of good conversations with guests that support it and a lot of conversations with guests that don’t. But ultimately as a business, we’re just doing what’s asked of us by the province and by the health authorities and are going to mandate those rules to the best of our ability,” said Walker.
