The heat is still hanging around, just days before we turn the calendar.
A total of 12 records were broken in Saskatchewan communities Monday, mostly located in the southern portions of the province.
According to Environment Canada’s Brian Luzny, Assiniboia, Broadview, Coronach, Last Mountain Lake, Lucky Lake, Rockglen, Val Marie, Watrous, Weyburn, Wynyard and Yorkton all set records, but not by much.
“Temperatures (were) hovering between that 29 C and 31 C range. They didn’t shatter any records, but most of them were broken by 0.5 C, or 0.8 C,” Luzny explained.
“We had several places that hit 31.0 C, in Weyburn, Lucky Lake and Coronach. Those look like to be the hottest, and they were all records.”
Although temperatures are seasonally high for this time of year, Luzny explained that September is a mixed bag in terms of the weather.
“It’s not uncommon to have a couple days in September hit that 30 C mark,” he said. “It will probably happen again (Tuesday) for parts of southern Saskatchewan … It’s not uncommon for any day in September.”
Highs of 29 C and 32 C are forecast Tuesday for Saskatoon and Regina, respectively. Records for the two cities for this day in history are 30 C for Saskatoon and 32.2 C for Regina.
Typically, for this time of year, the mercury should be sitting between 15 C and 4 C in Saskatoon, and 16 C and 1 C in Regina.
