A police chase in Saskatoon that involved the use of three spike belts ended Monday when a stolen van hit three police vehicles and a house.
According to the Saskatoon Police Service, officers responded at about 7:40 p.m., to a report that a vehicle had been stolen from a business in the 2600 block of Avenue C North.
Police tapped into the stolen SUV’s GPS to track it to the area of 33rd Street and Junor Avenue, where a spike belt was laid out. It wasn’t successful in stopping the SUV, so the vehicle made its way to Confederation Drive and then to Clancy Drive, where it drove into a park.
Officers deployed another spike belt on Fairlight Drive and managed to deflate two of the SUV’s tires. But the driver kept going, eventually returning to the location on Avenue C where the vehicle had been stolen.
There, the suspect abandoned the SUV and allegedly stole a cube van.
When the driver tried to leave the area again, another spike belt was laid down. The van then struck three police vehicles before hitting a house in the 800 block of Avenue S North.
A 27-year-old Saskatoon man was arrested and faces four counts of assaulting a police officer and one count each of possession of stolen property, dangerous driving, theft, and breach of court conditions.
