Two men have been charged in connection with a murder that occurred Friday on the Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation.
Just before 7 a.m., the Rosthern RCMP received a call from Rosthern EMS reporting a man had been found dead in a truck in a rural area near the First Nation.
The Mounties subsequently determined the call was related to a report they had received at about 1:20 a.m., regarding a fight in a home on the Cree Nation. Police got another call about the house just before 4 a.m.
The dead man was identified as 26-year-old Brandon Cameron from the Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation. Investigators determined his death was a murder.
On Friday at around 12:30 p.m., officers arrested 22-year-old Straughn Smallchild at a home on the First Nation and charged him with one count of second-degree murder.
On Saturday, 32-year-old Cory Littlepine was arrested on the First Nation and charged with one count of accessory after the fact to aggravated assault.
Both men were to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Tuesday.
The RCMP didn’t explain why news of the murder wasn’t released until four days after the incident happened.
The Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation is about 90 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
