The Greg Fertuck murder trial is set to begin Tuesday at Court of Queen’s Bench in Saskatoon following a postponement earlier this year because of COVID-19 concerns.
Fertuck is accused of killing his estranged wife, Sheree Fertuck, in 2015 and getting rid of her body.
Fertuck disappeared in December 2015 after leaving her family’s farmyard east of Kenaston. Her semi-truck was found abandoned at a nearby gravel pit, with her keys, jacket and cellphone still inside.
Her remains have never been found.
The five-week trial was originally set to begin March 29, but was postponed due to COVID-19 variants of concern in Regina and a travel advisory asking people not to needlessly travel from the Queen City.
Fertuck was arrested in June of 2019 and charged with first-degree murder and offering an indignity to a body.
While the case seemingly went cold for some time, it was later revealed the RCMP suspected Fertuck and initiated a Mr. Big sting operation, a tactic where police officers pretend to be criminals and build relationships with the suspect.
The intention is to get a confession, which they did from Fertuck in 2019.
