An RCMP cruiser had to force a car off the Trans-Canada Highway near Swift Current on Wednesday, ending a wild ride that saw the car reach speeds of more than 200 kilometres per hour.
In a media release Friday, the Mounties said officers responded around 7:30 p.m., to 10 reports of a speeding car heading east on the highway near Gull Lake.
“It was reported part of the windshield was smashed out and there were no lights on except hazards,” the RCMP said in a media release.
“The car reportedly stopped and started driving again multiple times on the highway, drove in the wrong direction, turned back around and stopped in the passing lane before driving eastbound again.”
Officers found the car on the Trans-Canada west of Swift Current, but the driver didn’t stop after an officer turned on their vehicle’s emergency equipment.
The Mounties followed the car, which sped up to more than 200 km/h before stopping abruptly several times. The RCMP said a spike belt couldn’t be deployed for officer safety reasons.
The release added that because the car was close to Swift Current, an RCMP vehicle “made strategic contact with the car,” sending it into the ditch south of the highway.
The driver, a 38-year-old Manitoba woman, was arrested at the scene and faces seven charges, including impaired driving and dangerous driving.
