Alberta is reinstating a number of measures in hopes of stemming the tide of COVID-19 in the province.
During a media conference Friday, the provincial government announced it was putting a provincewide mask mandate back into place effective Saturday for all indoor public spaces and workplaces.
The mandate doesn’t apply to classrooms, as those decisions are being left to local school boards.
As well, bars, restaurants and pubs must stop selling alcohol by 10 p.m. The government also is asking businesses to reconsider having staff members return to workplaces.
The province also is offering $100 gift cards to people over the age of 18 to encourage them to get their first or second doses of a COVID vaccine. That initiative is to run from Saturday through Oct. 14.
Kenney said 70 per cent of people in the province over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated, but Alberta continues to experience rising case numbers.
On Thursday, the province reported there were 487 COVID hospitalizations, with 114 of those in intensive care.
Kenney told reporters more than 80 per cent of all COVID hospitalizations in Alberta since Aug. 1 have been unvaccinated people.
