The City of Saskatoon is offering an incentive to make homes greener and energy efficient.
The Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) officially launched on Wednesday.
It provides low-interest loans to single-family homeowners for energy efficiency upgrades and renewable energy installations that are repayable through their property taxes.
“What makes the program unique is that the loans are tied to the property and not the person. To be eligible, property owners would need to have their property taxes in good standing, and no additional credit checks are needed,” said Jeanna South, the city’s director of sustainability.
Eligible projects include high-efficiency furnaces, water heaters, boilers and air conditioners. Windows, doors, insulation and green energy retrofits such as solar panels are also eligible.
The city has allocated $2.5 million for the program this year, which is enough for about 100 applicants.
HELP, designed with the help of home builders, is not intended for smaller changes such as switching to LED lights or installing a low-flow shower head.
Smith said the program will be assessed annually.
People can apply for the program on the city’s website.
