If it weren’t for security staff at the Royal University Hospital (RUH), this story could have had a different ending.
Around 7:20 p.m. Monday, Saskatoon Police and Saskatoon Fire responded to several fires burning along the lower path of the river bank. This was located on the 700 block of 25th Street East.
The RUH security staff were the initial responders to the scene, extinguishing the fire quickly.
Emergency crews made sure the area was safe shortly thereafter.
In a release from Saskatoon Police, members said the fires were small but there were a lot of them. The first fire was set close to the Broadway Bridge on the east side of the river.
Small spots of fire continued to catch, moving north along the riverbank until the final blaze near the top of the University Bridge.
Police are considering the fires suspicious in nature. It’s believed that the fires started between 6 and 7 p.m. Monday.
