More than 15,000 seniors in Saskatchewan will be seeing an increase in their maximum monthly benefit provided through a government seniors plan.
A $30 increase came into effect on July 1, 2021 for those receiving the Seniors Income Plan offered by the provincial government.
Saskatchewan’s Seniors Income Plan provides financial assistance to seniors to help them meet their basic needs. It is available to seniors receiving little or no income other than federal Old Age Security pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
The monthly benefit is automatically applied to eligible seniors based on the filing of their most recent tax return and provides greater support to low-income seniors.
The plan’s maximum benefit is also scheduled to increase by an additional $30 each year over the next two years. The increase this year will bring the benefit from $270 to $300 per month for single pensioners and from $470 to $530 per month for two-pensioner households.
The minimum benefit will also see an increase, from $10 each month to $15.
Social services minister Lori Carr said the increase is part of a commitment to improving the quality of life for seniors in Saskatchewan.
“This extra money will help Saskatchewan seniors live more comfortably and securely as they continue participating in and contributing to communities across the province,” Carr said.
Six increases to the plan have been made by the Government of Saskatchewan since 2008.
