The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency said Wednesday only eight of 127 active wildfires in the province are considered contained.
During a conference call with the media, SPSA vice-president of operations Steve Roberts said more fires could start due to the hot conditions in the province.
“The weather forecast is for continued hot (and) dry weather,” he said. “We will see scattered showers, which will give us lightning, which will give us new fires to manage.”
The SPSA is currently making calls to local firefighters to help manage and contain more fires. The provincial fire ban will remain in place to help slow the spread for the next three to five days.
Evacuations are currently being managed by each area’s tribal council. Currently, some areas are on standby to leave.
“There are some communities in the La Ronge area that are of course planning should they evacuate, but currently we have not moved any of those individuals,” Roberts said.
So far, there hasn’t been any confirmation on whether evacuees will be sent to Regina or Saskatoon.
